Although there is disagreement over the details of how to address it, most elected officials point to housing as a top concern in New York state. According to a new report by Democratic state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, almost 3 million New Yorkers face housing costs that take up more than 30 percent of their household income — and 20 percent are spending more than half of their income on housing. DiNapoli says it puts New York near the top of the scale — with acute effects in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Long Island plus urban centers around the state.
