An organization responsible for identifying $5.7 billion worth of tax fraud in 2022 is one of the lesser-known federal law enforcement agencies. The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation division has more than 2,000 special agents and roughly 1,000 professional staff, making it the sixth-largest federal law enforcement agency in the U.S. It’s the only one authorized to investigate federal criminal tax violations. The New York Field Office – responsible for the entire state – is led by Special Agent in Charge Tom Fattorusso. The Capital Region native speaks with WAMC’s Jim Levulis.
