Today on the Best of Our Knowledge, we’ll talk to the founders of a guide to colleges for students who learn differently.
The K & W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Differences is named after its two founders: Marybeth Kravets and Imy Wax. The two met when Kravets, the ‘K’ in the title was working as a counselor at Deerfield High School in Illinois, and Wax, the ‘W’, was a parent looking for help for her daughter who had been diagnosed with two learning disabilities. At the time there was no guide to colleges with programs to help students with learning differences. There was also no internet. Two years of research followed and resulted in the self-published first edition of the K & W guide.
Marybeth Kravets is director of college counseling at Wollcott College Prep in Chicago, a high school for students who learn differently. Kravets is also the president of Marybeth Kravets & Associates, and educational and college consulting firm. Imy Wax is an educational and therapeutic consultant, a psychotherapist and president, and founder of the Aspire group. We asked what they considered a learning difference when they started this project over 30 years ago.
